The one thing that I have come to fully realize, appreciate and share with my clients is that success comes down to one key element—-you. Sure there may be obstacles that get in the way, but in the end it will be your determination and belief that will result in your achieving your goals.

It’s very easy for us to blame other people or circumstances for our own inability to move to the next level. Truth is that we fail to move because of our own indecision, fears or lack of direction.

So keep this in mind when you are ready to blame someone or some thing. It’s really up to you!

It’s easy for anyone to write down their goals or aspirations, but it is another thing to make them happen. The mere fact of writing is a good first step, but is just that—-a good first step. Next, you need a plan of action and then, more importantly, the resolve to make it happen.

The word “commitment” has a number of meanings, but in the end it is all about DOING. If you are serious about achieving your goals and becoming successful then the one key personal ingredient you will need is the “will to do it”.

It’s the critical difference between knowing what to do and doing what you know.

Over the past few months many of you that have read this blog and have taken the time to send very heartfelt and extremely kind remarks about the value and insights gained. To each of you that have responded and for those who have not, but have found the little bits of insights that I share valuable, let me send a very sincere thank you.

I am forever amazed, pleased and at time overwhelmed by the nature and depth of the human spirit. I know of no stronger force than that of one’s “will” to be successful and fulfilled. There is nothing that you can’t do when you can ignite your own human spirit. So get out there keeping in mind that there are no mistakes—-only learning opportunities!!

It’s sad, in a way, that when I ask my adult clients to share their dreams many tell me they have none. While there may be many reasons for this, the bottom line is that many people have simply stopped dreaming.

As kids, we fantasized about being someone or doing something special or daring. When asked, we freely and unashamedly shared our hopes; all of which came directly from those crazy dreams we had dancing in our heads. We need to rekindle that habit and start dreaming again—-no matter what one’s age. Dreams are uncluttered pathways to a desired better future; one that is filled with whatever degree of joy, excitement and adventure that you choose. And the beauty of them is that they are yours and yours alone. It’s not important if they are realistic or even if they meet the approval of another. The more important takeaway is that dreams give us hope and inspiration as to what tomorrow could be.

So keep dreaming!!!

I was recently working with one of my new clients who happened to mention that he was hoping to “catch a break” in terms of his life, career and overall direction. As we talked further, it became clear to me, and eventually to him, that what he was really seeking was not a break, but rather a breakthrough!

Think about where you are and where you want to go. Are you looking to catch a break or are you really seeking a breakthrough—–one that is truly life changing and sustainable. The difference between the two is huge.

One of the critical skills for any coach to possess is that of being a good listener. In fact, my coaching approach is roughly 90% listening and about 10% talking. You would be amazed at what you can learn by simply listening.

Now it’s not an easy skill to learn or to master. Let’s face it, we all like to talk and share what we know or think we know. Truth is that we will expand our knowledge three-fold by listening rather than spouting off. The other wonderful benefit of being a good listener is that you will be amazingly valued, trusted and sought out by others.

So engage your ears first, before you engage your voice.

I was recently attending a party when one of the other guests learned that I was a coach. Without much hesitation or coaxing and after a quick introduction, this gentleman went on to share with me the fact that his 30 year old daughter has been struggling with her career and most aspects of her life. At the conclusion of his telling of her story, he then asked if I could take her on as a client.

I noted that I would love to help, but it’s the one with the pain that must take the action. In other words, as well meaning as her father was I could not be of any help until his daughter recognized that she is in “pain” and wants to do something about it. Until then, no amount of pushing (by parents, friends or others) or hoping is going to have any meaningful impact.

Keep that in mind when seeking to help others.

If you’re lucky enough to find a special person, you will have found one of the keys to long-lasting personal and professional success. So get going and start searching!!
